Wrong

Posted on Friday, May 12th, 2006

Dave! For some reason, I seem to be getting a rash of wrong number calls to my mobile phone. It didn't used to be a problem, but seems to happen several times a week now. All I can guess is that some dumbass has gotten a new phone with similar digits and is mistakenly passing out my number to his friends. Or maybe he's not a dumbass, but he has a lot of dumbass friends who don't know how to dial.

Anyway, early this morning I was awakened by my mobile phone. It's set to vibrate, but still managed to wake me up. Turns out somebody had left me a voice mail hours earlier which went something like this...

"F#@%!! Miguel has been pulled over by the f#@%ing cops, and they won't release the car until he shows them the f#@%ing papers. F#@%ing call me back NOW!!

Fortunately, I wasn't awake when the call came, or I probably would have been a smartass and said something like this.

Sure it's funny, but I'd regret it afterwards.

You'd think that for something involving the police, you'd be a little more careful when dialing your phone. Of course, if the police are involved you might also want to be a bit nicer when you ask somebody to bring you papers in the middle of the night. I can only guess that Miguel and this woman who accidentally called me are now in jail or something. I'd try to feel bad about it, but they did wake me up at 2:47am with their message, so I really don't.

I wish I could say that the wrong number call was the only excitement for the evening, but it wasn't.

As I was going to bed shortly after midnight, all kinds of noise and flashing lights were happening outside. Apparently, the crotchety old people in the mobile home next door tried to burn their home down. Two fire trucks arrived at the scene, so apparently it was pretty serious.

These are the same fighting old people I wrote about last year, so part of me suspects that one of them finally tried to kill the other. Welcome to the redneck wilds of Central Washington.

We? Wheee? Wii??? Whatever, it looks like fun and I want one. I hope that Lego Star Wars comes out for it, because using the wireless wand controller like a lightsaber would kick ass!

Wiicontrol2

In an age when Microsoft and Sony are releasing video game systems costing $500+ and titles so complex that they are more like work than entertainment... it's nice to know that Nintendo is focusing on what really matters... FUN GAME PLAY. If the titles end up being anywhere near the quality in the DS games, it's going to be one cool product.

I think the Wii might be on my 2006 wish list. I still want a XBox 360 and a Playstation 3, and a Nintendo DS and a PSP. But I guess I’ll just have to be happy with my Gamecube, PS2, Xbox and N64 for the time being.

Though I guess I could always pull out the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Regular Nintendo and the Atari 2600 if I feel like it.

Oh and all the other pong consoles I have. Stupid pong.

Am I making you jealous 🙂

    Yup. I’m a jerk.

  2. Dave2 says:

Only for the Sega Genesis, which I never owned.

For systems I have Atari 2600, Atari 7800, ColecoVision, Nintendo 64, PlayStation, GameCube, and Xbox.

For handhelds I have MicroVision, Gameboy, Atari Lynx, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance, and GameBoy DS.

I never had a Pong console. Stupid Pong!

  3. Now you have the type of neighbors I like, resolve things through FIRE! Fire is natures arbitrator – you won’t give me the remote – let’s set the TV on fire and see who wins – Fire wins!

Also, you might get less messages left for miguel if you bought your phone though, say, a phone store, instead of from a guy at the flea market who tells you to call him “Spamball” and assures you that, yeah, this phone is totally legit, he just got, like, way too many of them as gifts, you know.

  4. adena says:

It never fails to amaze me that people leave messages on wrong numbers. Do they NOT listen to the message? I mean, I have had people calling me, setting up doctor’s appts, etc, and my cell CLEARLY states that you have reached Adena’s cell….NOT a doctor’s office….but, whatever.

Mobile home parks are ALWAYS the best place to have random stuff happen. Nothing like watching people w/ no teeth go at each other. ESPECIALLY in the redneck wilds of Central Washington. 🙂

  5. adena says:

Oh, and I want an xBox 360 ONLY for “Oblivion”. I don’t care about the other games….just a 360 and Oblivion, please. You don’t even have to wrap them!!:)

  6. Brandon says:

My game playing ability topped out during the Super Nintendo years and I have been too cheap since to really get into playing games. But I can kick anyones ass in Super Tecmo Bowl.

I have a Playstation 2, but it serves primarily as my DVD player. I do occasionally play some hockey on it though. Is Lego Star Wars available for the PS2? I might come out of my games coma for that one.

  7. Dave2 says:

Elizabeth: Trust me… if I had the option of buying my $600 WorldPhone from some guy named “Spamball” at a substantial savings over the sticker price, I would have gladly done it AND put up with the wrong numbers. As it is, I bought from Verizon directly. 🙁

Adena: I keep waiting for guns to go off, and am rather shocked that they haven’t come into play yet. There are some wacky, wacky people in my neighborhood. As for Elder Scrolls Oblivion… have you played it yet? I kept getting distracted by how beautiful it is. Unfortunately, any time you go outside, the picture stutters, which sucks ass. They should have scaled back on the outdoor visuals in order to keep framerates up. It is almost good enough to buy a 360 for… but I’m sticking with “Fable” on my original Xbox for now.

Brandon: YES! Lego Star Wars is absolutely available for PS2. It’s very nice to look at, but the play is old-school, so you should rent it and give it a try. I think it’s meant for kids, but it has variety enough to keep things interesting (especially for Star Wars fans). It’s easily my favorite game from the past decade… great for just kicking back and having fun because it’s not overly-complicated or difficult.

  8. adena says:

I haven’t played “Oblivion” yet, because my computer sucks too bad to play the computer version, and I don’t have a 360.

However, I have the 1st Elder Scrolls for my boring, ORIGINAL xbox, and I am sadly completely addicted to it. So, I figure that “Oblivion” would cause me to become one w/ my couch, and possibly cause me to stop bathing, altogether. It’s probably a good thing I haven’t shelled out the moolah for the console, yet. At least I’m still clean.

I have “Fable”, too….it’s fun, but I still like Morrowind better.

  9. suze says:

that looks like a video game system i might play.

and oooh. snark with strangers who mistakenly call your phone is so much fun. don’t feel bad about it later, enjoy the now! =P

  10. babyoog says:

Wow! Wave, point, rumble AND listen? Where do I sign up? 🙂

I have a tough time justifying the purchase of new gaming systems to myself, so I usually blame it on the kids. But who am I kidding? After a long hard week of dealing with bitch clients, I like to blow the heads off half a dozen zombies.

  11. Kevin says:

They did finally come out with the first Star Wars Lego game for the GameCube so it’s not as though it cannot be licensed to the Wii. I hope it is. Like you said, the lightsabers would be kick ass. So would Speeder Bikes in the Endor Forest. Whhhheeeeeeee!!!!

All this for what is likely going to cost under $200. How can you go wrong. I want nothing to do with the 360 or PS3. I’m all about Wiiiiiiiii!!!!

  12. nick sizzle says:

sony and microsoft are just plain ridiculous with the prices of their system. and all the games seem to be first person shooters or sports games…*yawn* on the other hand the Wii looks like it will be a REVOLUTION!!

  13. Michelle says:

Hello again! Haha, all of my wrong-number calls have stopped now. I only wish I’d had as amusing calls as the one you had =(

  14. I haven’t bought a video game system since Super Nintendo. All the games these days are way too complex for my old-school Atari 2600 ways. It was so much easier when there was only one friggin’ button to contend with!

  15. Kathleen says:

I saw those nintendo wand things on tv – they look fun! now you can be a couch potato and exercise – finally let Nintendo SAVE ALL THE FAT KIDS!

    but anyway.

I have had the same phone humber for three years, and I STILL get call from one place – The Victims Advocate Association or whatever they are called. They are always looking for the same police officer who apparently used to have my number. and the officer is a girl – yea me.

I say the same thing every time – take this number off her name, and STOP CALLING ME.

  16. Nicole says:

I had some moron that kept calling me in the middle of the night for a while. He would call, hang up, call again, repeat. Finally I answered the phone and told him he had the wrong freaking number. But every so often he would call again! He called so frequently he remembered my name from my voicemail and would call and apologize for calling and I was like, why the hell do you keep calling then? He was either a complete moron or the telephone company was screwing with his brain (and mine) and redirecting his calls to me. I think the first option is the most likely.

  17. Jeff says:

My kids have one of those dance pads for Game Cube. They love it. I tried it once.

    Once.

  18. Bre says:

Is it sad that it took me a really long time to figure out what they were doing? My video game skills peaked with duck hunt.

  19. Jacynth says:

Um, didn’t he listen to your voice mail and realize he was calling the wrong number? What a dicklick!

  20. Ben says:

if sony=final fantasy and metal gear solid
    then brand loyalty = true.

  21. Grins says:

Your late night wrong number reminded me of one of my own. I blogged about it as wellL http://grinsnlaughter.com/?p=13

  22. Jaxia says:

I would have paid to see the face of that girl if you had said something like that!

  23. Neil says:

Just think… if all the criminals of the world would use that wireless remote rather than a gun, the world would be a safer place.

  24. nancycle says:

Hmmm….Out with the Eye-Toy in with the Wii…I can’t wait to try it.

“That donunt had better be fresh!!” hee hee

    Good whoan Dave! 🙂

  25. Mocha says:

I think the dance pads look like they’d be fun for me, but no one who “dances” on them looks good. They look pained and the stomping? Oh, it’s not pretty.

    Everyone should STOP that. Now.

  26. SJ says:

I’m guessing turning the cell phone OFF at night isn’t an option?

Of course, you’d still have to contend with the voicemails in the morning, but at least you’d get uninterrupted sleep!

  27. Eve says:

The Lego Star Wars II was not on the list for Wii games from the E3 Expo, but apparently NO LucasArts games were there. Another report said that Lucas has expressed interest in bringing the game to WII for obvious reasons — the lightsaber play!!!! We’ll see, it seems like a given.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance WILL be available for Wii, in November!

  28. Eve says:

Oops, I just realized what I wrote. I didn’t mean to write “the” game, I meant to say “a” game. LucasArts said they are interested in creating a NEW game for Wii that would focus on lightsaber battles.

  29. ms. sizzle says:

i’m still laughing about how you responded to that lady yelling at you for being late to dinner. that is hilarious.

    poor miguel.

    😉 sizz
