Butter

Posted on Thursday, May 4th, 2006

Dave!First of all... praise be to The Force.

I'm the type of person who becomes easily addicted to foods. Last week I was addicted to fried egg sandwiches. I had one every single day for dinner until I ran out of eggs on day 6. Right now I'm going through a kind of Pop-Tart renaissance, whereas I am consuming them for breakfast and lunch each day.

Several weeks ago, my food addiction of choice was cheese and potato pierogies. It was so bad that I was going through a box of Mrs. T's Pierogies every single day, which got kind of expensive. So when the Schwan's Man dropped by and offered up a huge bag of pierogies for a bargain price, I went ahead and took him up on the deal.

Unfortunately, they sucked ass. Schwan's Pierogies were nothing like Mrs. T's Pierogies... even though they look the exact same. Heartbroken, I shoved the bad bag to the back of the freezer and forgot about them.

Until last night when I was having trouble finding something to eat. In digging through the freezer, I ran across that bag of pierogies and decided "what the heck, it's all I got". But then as I was tossing them on a cookie sheet for baking (which is how I usually cook them), I accidentally read the recommended cooking instructions. Turns out you are supposed to boil them, then saute them in butter. So I did.

Freakin' amazing. Is there ANYTHING that doesn't taste better with a stick of butter on top??

Butter

So now I'm addicted to Schwan's Pierogies, and am terrified that I'm going to run out before the Schwan's Man drops by again. I sure hope it's soon, because I'm also out of banana popsicles...

Banana-Pop

Nothing like a banana-pop to make your day a little better.

If you’re putting butter on your banana pop, then that takes it to a WHOLE new realm….one which will make me NEVER look at a banana pop the same way again.

    Poor, violated banana pops….

    RTFPB

I tend to eat convenience, rather than comfort, foods. Monday I boiled a bunch of chicken breast; I don’t know how long to bake them, frying them is sort of greasy and requires too much attention (I’m assuming, I’ve never done it) … but with boiling I know I can put them in a pot of water, set the burner to ‘hi’ (do I really need any other setting?) and come back in an hour. For all I know they are boiled done in 10 minutes … in 60 they certainly are. I have lunch/dinner for several days.

I couldn’t have Pop Tarts every day, unless I shopped for them daily. Almost every snack thing I buy comes in a single-serving size. A one-ounce bag of chips … a single serving. A two-pound bag of Doritos … a single serving. Box of Pop Tarts … well, you get the picture. I seem to lack any sense of portion/impulse control when it comes to snack items.

I have the same problem with pizza. Boiled chicken, not so much.

  3. Chanakin says:

I read the news on SW this morning. Balance is once again restored to the Universe.

For “all things butter” recipes, I look to The Simpsons.

“I’m sorry, but we’re not supposed to put butter on the Milk Duds…”

  4. ssp says:

I strongly suspect you’ll like tomorrow’s post on my site. Including egg, loads of butter and significant yumminess.

I’ve never heard about pierogies before, but a quick glance at Wikipedia suggests this may be a language problem. The look a bit like wan tans.

  5. Rob says:

Your on to something Dave! Freeze a stick of butter on a pop-stick and you have great frozen treat. Heck you could then also freeze some gravy and do the same thing. Just think, dinner as a frozen snack.

  6. Robin says:

What is that stick of butter DOING to the other stick of butter? When my friend was first dating her husband, he cooked her a fancy dinner of Hamburger helper. She had never liked it, but she was game and had a serving and was surprised that it was the best tasting and richest hamburger helper she had ever had. She asked him how he prepared it, and he said, “Well, I make it how it says, but I like it with more butter.” She said, “How MUCH butter?” “2 sticks.” mmmm..Lipo-licious!

  7. Kevin says:

I love your Brokeback Butter Sticks in the bottom right of your butter montage. At least they use lube.

  8. nancycle says:

Ok, I’m gonna try and control myself here *sigh* – but understand that butter = Matthew McConnahey. I do admire the “butter on butter” graphics :-). I agree, butter does make everything taste better. As for the Perogies in the far off nether regions of the freezer, brought back to life and then realizing boiling then frying is part of the equation…Been there, done that. Now, add some hot sauce, sour cream, maybe some chives…Uhhh Hello! ๐Ÿ˜€

  9. jackt says:

First rule of eatin’ good: When in doubt, deep fry!

  10. Bre says:

I live in an area where perogies are a delicacy – and a favored one at that… Schwann’s and Mrs. T’s might be good, but once you’ve tasted the hand made stuff, you can never go back!

  11. Grins says:

If you change it to a banana & cream popsicle it makes a healthy breakfast. Fruit and dairy…tada.

  12. jodi says:

I do the same thing. I remember almost 3 weeks of daily doses of Stovetop Stuffing. Mmmmm…. then I couldn’t eat it for years.

  13. Alexis says:

I remember my high school chemistry teacher telling us about the crazy Scandanavian foods his family served (an obvious topic in chemistry class, as lab chemicals lead to lye leads to lutefisk *shudder*), complete with this charming dessert recipe: a whole stick of butter, rolled in cinnamon and sugar. That’s it – no cooking, just cut off a helping of sugary fat and listen to your arteries clog. I still wonder if this is really a common Scandanavian treat, or if his family were all butterholics who just happened to be Swedish.

    BTW, I’d like to order a Butter-on-Butter Porn T-shirt.

  14. Naomi says:

Mmmmm… banana-pop… Better than banana-pop? Hmm… How ’bout Saturday being the comic industry’s FREE comic book day! So Nerdtastic!

  15. Dave2 says:

Adena: The butter won’t stay on my banana pop, so I guess I’ll be eating them butter-free. ๐Ÿ™

Delmer: My problem with pizza is that I will continue to eat it until there isn’t any left… I simply cannot stop until the entire pie has been consumed. I’ve been cooking half-pizzas now so that I don’t have to worry about exploding from too much pizza.

Chanakin: Oh yeah… I remember an episode on The Simpsons where they kept talking about “drenched in rich, savory butter” – my kind of television show. Mmmm… butter.

SSP: I dunno about the language translation… wan-tans to me are a Chinese food… crispy fried. I think that pirogues are Polish? All I know is that I love cheese. I love potatoes. I love pasta. Since pierogies are pasta stuffed with potatoes and cheese, they’re pretty much a perfect food. ๐Ÿ™‚

Rob: Mmmm… frozen butter! I’d think that a frozen cube of butter to lick while eating popcorn would be cool!

Robin: I’m just saying that even butter is probably better with a stick of butter on top. Can you ever have too much butter? Probably not… butter is salty fat. Salty fat is good. ๐Ÿ™‚

Kevin: That’s uhhh… an interesting take on it! Actually, I’m kind of sad that I didn’t think of this because hot butter on butter action is funny. ๐Ÿ˜€

Nancycle: Oh oh oh… or sage! Frying up perogies with butter and sage! How awesome would THAT be?

Jackt: No doubt. I’ve had deep-fried Snickers and deep-fried Twinkies before… they do taste totally awesome.

Bre: I don’t know where I’d find authentic pierogies… Seattle perhaps? I’m not sure where the nearest concentration of Polish food-stuffs is in Washington State.

Grins: I don’t know that I can buy a creamy banana fruit pop. I do have a peach-mango all-fruit pop that’s awesome though!

Jodi: Fortunately my food-fad addictions eventually fade out. Otherwise I’d weigh about 500 pounds now. ๐Ÿ™‚

Alexis: Hmmm… we’d have to ask Patrick about that!

Naomi: I buy my comics through the mail, so I have to wait to get my free comics. ๐Ÿ™

  16. Gรถran says:

FYI: Japanese greentea and sushi are kind of spoilt if sprinkled with butter.

Just thought Iยดd share that ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. Robin says:

My stepson calls sticks of butter coated in sugar: “Shame Sticks” which is taken from some comedian, can’t remember who.

  18. adena says:

I wasn’t referring to you EATING the banana pop….

    I’m just sayin’…:)

  19. Eve says:

    Praise be.

Come join me and Kevin at the end of the world.

Hmmm… butter. I had a bad experience with butter, so I say Down with Butter! Yes, pierogies are Polish. I think it’s traditionally boiled then covered with sour cream. I eat them plain or sometimes as a mock ravoli with marinara sauce on it. Like you said, it’s pasta and potatoes, what’s not to like? That’s why gnocchi is so yummy, too.

And right on, Naomi! Free Comic Book Day, yippee!

Dave, dude, buddy, pal, how can you not savor the bursting shelves at your local shop on Wednesdays? Do I have to do a search of your site to find out why you have your comics delivered by mail? This better be good.

  20. mrjerz says:

Butter is good just by itself. Or on top of anything, you’re right. I usually put it into cocktails. Tasty margaritas. And you know, I so blew off Star Wars that I never realized it was changed to Greedo shooting first. Or maybe I have no idea what I’m talking about. It’s about lunchtime, and I’m craving butter off of a hooker’s ass.

  21. Cavan says:

I love banana popsicles! Until now, I thought there was no one else who felt likewise.

  22. karla says:

I understand about the ongoing food cravings. I’ve had a non fat mocha with vanilla syrup every morning for about 10 years now. (In Starbucks speak that would be a grandevanillanonfatnowhipmocha)

And this past two weeks, in my efforts to force myself to eat breakfast, I have become addicted to hard boiled eggs on whole wheat toast with mayo.

A stick of butter may just kick it up that notch I need to really enjoy it.

    Mmmm…butter.

  23. Harold says:

That comment about “BrokeBack” butter sticks was hilariously some funny shit ! The thought of what Bad Monkey could do with a stick of Butter is now haunting me !

  24. ms. sizzle says:

but. . .where are the vegetables? are there no veggies in your diet?

    concerned,
    sizzle

  25. nancycle says:

    – INSERT HOMER SIMPSON ahhhhhhhhhh *drool* –

Sage = YES….Still want hot sauce and sour cream though!

  26. Mooselet says:

Most of my food cravings are chocolate based, and since butter is essential to good chocolate…

But I can’t eat butter straight up. My son used to eat sticks of butter right from the fridge when he was 2-3 and honest-to-God it made me gag.

  27. ChillyWilly says:

Butter… I love butter. Nothing like oatmeal or toast swmimming in butter.

  28. margalit says:

Is there a Trader Joes anywhere near you? Because I’m guessing you’d find a lot of really great freezer meals there and you’d be able to expand your cravings accordingly.

Perogies dripping in butter sound lethal. Good, but lethal.

  29. Bec says:

I have been giggling most of the day and dancing like an Ewok since the Star Wars news came to me… Ah, the sweet joy!
Butter…mmmmmmm… Pierogies? Huh? Heard them mentioned on films and things but stupid UK… Apparently can’t buy them frozen here. So looked for the recipe, have found, and am going to try to make… My cooking is a bit hit and miss… But I’ll try them on my housemate first…

  30. Troy says:

Were you just taking the perogies out of the freezer and cooking them on a cookie sheet? That’s crazy. I’ve never tried that. I usually just boil them, throw some cheese on them, and microwave them until the cheese melts.

When I feel like an overachiever I’ll fry them up in butter or oil, then put the cheese on. And if you want an amazing flavour experience take some bacon (or in your case simulated tofu bacon), crisp it up then take some onion and fry it up. Take the boiled and fried perogies, put them in a baking pan, add the bacon, the onions, and some grated cheese. Cook it in the pan until the cheese melts and enjoy. Amazing, but way too much work.

Oh yeah. Add sour cream to it and it’s even better. Fat city here you come.

  31. Belinda says:

I’m totally with Kevin and his “Brokeback Butter” observation. There’s always the possibility that WE’RE the perverts, instead of you, though.

Speaking of cheese and potatoes, I’m still irked with you for putting that “Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes” bee in my bonnet. It’s harder and harder to drive by Taco Bell on the way home without succumbing to the CFP siren call.

  32. sun says:

They are also very good, just boiled with spaghetti sauce and parmesian cheese. Now I am sooooo craving them. Darn.

  33. NetChick says:

Hey, you sound like me with your pop tart phase, except, for me it ain’t no phase. In fact, I have this thing about traveling to foreign places with pop tarts. I can’t go unless I have at least one per day packed away for while I’m gone, because who knows if I’ll be able to hunt and gather breakfast food in some strange country that I’ll actually eat.

Oh, and I have a grilled cheese sandwhich every. single. day. for lunch!

  34. Jaxia says:

Personally, I love coconut popsicles! And fudge bombs. OoO – fudge bombs. Chocolate AND bananas. What more could a person want?

  35. joy says:

ooh. you are so the Schwann’s man’s bitch now. You’d better keep likin’ those there perogies or some other type of deep frozen food product, because that there Schwann’s man is never going to quit stalking you.

I know, because I once bought some frozen sole from mine, and now I have to hide like I am not home when he comes a’callin.

  36. timothy says:

Seeing the butter on everything action brought back an eerie childhood memory that I’d tucked back in some crinkle of my brain. When I was in the second or third grade, I had a friend that I will call “Christy,” and her parents used to keep a tub of margerine (I know, not butter, but close enough) on their bedside table. At the time, I’m sure I thought they needed it to improve the taste of their midnight snacks of corn on the cob (or pierogies). What did they really used it for? I’m still not sure, but I’m a bit disturbed and disgusted by the images the brokeback butter triggered in my mind.

  37. nancycle says:

    Timothy = ROFLMFAO!!!!!!

  38. exposed says:

    oh dave…
I have an obsession with the elusive blueberry unfrosted poptart…seriously they are the best, but good luck finding them. they just don’t exist on the shelves anymore. and this makes me want to “cry cry cry like a little girl.
    like.
    a.
    little.
    girl.”

  39. Brad says:

Will have to try the Schwan’s Pierogies.

I love their stuffed shells. 4 mins nuked and Voila!

    The kids love the Tortellinis…

  40. Katie says:

as a Polish American, I can assure you that real pierogies are meant to be FRIED, never boiled (which makes them taste like ass, or like raviolis, which they are not), and especially never baked (I have never heard of anyone baking pierogies…). At the very least, you must sautee them in butter until they’re crispy and start to brown. Otherwise, fry or deep-fry them. Onions are optional.

  41. Epona says:

ROFL! The butter-on-butter action is hilarious!
