Vodka

Posted on Thursday, March 9th, 2006

Dave!As I mentioned a while back, I'm going through kind of a Kool-Aid renaissance.

Lately I've been getting much bolder in my Kool-Aid choices, and have started to stray away from the classics (Grape, Orange, Lime, Tropical Punch) in order to try some of the freakier flavors they've got going on. First there were the "Kool-Aid Twists" which are blended flavors ("Swirlin' Strawberry Starfruit", for example). Then I experimented with "Kool-Aid Ice Cool" which adds a bit of tingle to the taste ("Arctic Green Apple" anyone?). And now I'm moving on to the "Kool-Aid Aguas Frescas" which are favorite flavors from Latin America...

Kool-Aid Flava

Last night was time for "Pineapple" which tastes about as unlike pineapple juice as you can get. I didn't care for it at all.

Until I added vodka to it.

Suddenly the pineapple-ish stuff became an exotic nectar of the gods. Which begs the question... is there any juice (or juice-like substance) that vodka doesn't taste good in? I like it in grape juice, orange juice, cranberry juice, pineapple juice, and any kind of fruit punch. I haven't tried it in apple juice yet, but something tells me that it will be equally tasty.

Much like a fresh episode of Project Catwalk with the delicious Elizabeth Hurley...

Project Catwalk 8 Liz

And speaking of alcohol, I need a new drink. I'm getting bored with the same old cocktails every time.

Here's the kind of stuff I like:

  • Jäger Bomber (Jäger & Red Bull Energy Drink).
  • Long Island Iced Tea (Vodka, Tequila, Rum, Gin, Triple-Sec, Sweet-n-Sour, Coke).
  • Hard Rootbeer (Capt. Morgan's Spiced Rum & Rootbeer).
  • Pinedriver (Vodka & Pineapple Juice).
  • Liquid Cocaine (Jäger, Bacardi 151, Goldschlager Cinnamon Schnapps).
  • Snakebite (Yukon Jack & Lime Juice).
  • Liquid Asphalt (Jäger & Sambuca).
  • Bronze Monkey (Vodka, Capt. Morgan's Spiced Rum, Orange Juice).
  • Jameson Irish Whiskey over Ice.
  • Any decent ice-cold beer (from the bottle).

Maybe I should create my own alcoholic beverage. I could call it the "Bad Monkey"...

Bad Monkey Cocktail

Too bad my lunch hour is almost up, because I would totally try drinking that.

I gave up on Kool-Aid when the betrayed me by discontinuing Purplesaurus Rex. I still weep for the days when I was always fully stocked with my beloved P-Rex.

  2. Dave2 says:

I love me the Purplesaurus Rex too. There was a petition I signed not so long ago to bring it back, but I doubt Kool-Aid pays attention to those kinds of things. Really too bad, because that was a great flavor, and I know many people remember it.

  3. Rob says:

Kool-Aid is stoneriffic!. Although I must have a broken taster. Because all the flavors taste the same to me. But, if I had to name my number one favorite flavor, I would have to say it is grape. Yeah, grape has to be the best.

  4. andi says:

I think you should try Cranberry juice with lime, ice, and vodka. Also another drink that my friends have nicknamed the Anditini is a mixture of fruit juices (usually berries), lemon juice and vodka. It doesn’t sound that different or inventive but it’s delicious. Also I have discovered that Dr. Pepper and vodka is surpisingly tasty when you get the right mixture. Sprite and vodka is another great one I discovered an open bar wedding I attended. The final good drink I will suggest is Blue Lagoon which is vodka, blue curacao, and lemon or lime juice. In case you haven’t guessed it already most of my favorite drinks are variations of vodka and pop or juice often with lime or lemon juice!

  5. ATTN. CONFUSED READERS: When Dave says “grape” what he means is “purple”.

I didn’t want anyone confused. At least you didn’t talk about that “cherry koolaid” stuff. ;>)

  6. Jeff says:

How in the world did you manage to sqeeze Elizabeth Hurley into your Kool-Aid post?

Smoooth – I barely even noticed it was hardly related.

  7. Jennifer says:

Ah, I wish I could help you. I’m a beer girl, straight up, ice cold.

And vodka. Mixed with anything that happens to be handy, with the possible exception of milk. Chocolate milk, maybe. Pure white stuff? I think not.

    Beyond that, I’m devoid.

  8. Dave2 says:

Rob: They do all taste alike… it’s the color that makes them different.

Andi: That will keep me busy for a while! I’m most anxious to try Dr. Pepper and vodka, as that mix hadn’t occurred to me before.

Kachina: See Rob, Kachina totally has the taste by color thing down. Reminds me of a Simpson’s episode where the “bad” kids go get Squishies at the Kwik-E-Mart and one kid asks the other “what flavor did you get?” and the kid answers “blue!”

Jeff: Elizabeth Hurley is totally appropriate to any conversation or situation! Why, just the other day I was discussing HyperPhysics as applied to calculation methods for the decay rate of radioactive waste (as adjusted by halflives of their component radioisotopes over an unstable rate of decline) and managed to comment how Elizabeth Hurley, being hotter than the sun, has a half-life of 78.6 billion years. See, it totally relates.

Jennifer: There is nothing wrong with being a “beer girl” and don’t ever let anybody tell you different!

  9. Brent says:

No offense Dave, but I think the Bad Monkey Cocktail is only fit for monkey consumption. I wouldn’t taste that liquid concoction with Elizabeth Hurley’s lips. I kid, of course, because I’ll drink anything with liquor in it. I like your drink preferences, especially the liquid cocaine. It gives me an idea of what I want to drink while I watch foreign cinema. Cheers.

  10. Nicole says:

My favorite drinks of the moment:

-Malibu & Coke with Lime: the coconut and lime flavors make it the ultimate tropical drink IMO.
-Black Russians: Vodka and Kahlua, you really can’t go wrong. Making it with Amaretto is pretty good too.

I’d also argue that not only does vodka go well with any juice, it goes well with pretty much anything. Until that moment around 2 a.m. when you start slurring the words “Vodka. Never Again.” and wishing you were dead. But chances are you’ll black out and forget that part anyway.

  11. Jon says:

You’re right that vodka and apple juice together kick ass. I used to do “apple pie” shots: vodka and apple cider topped with cinnamon (and sometimes whipped cream).

  12. Cavan says:

357 Magnum: Pour 1 oz vodka and 1 oz rum over ice. Fill with 7-up and stir. Add 1 oz Amaretto (without stirring) and enjoy.

Or, if you’re looking for something to enhance your 20% gay rating: You can make Roadrunner Punch with your favorite brand of Kool-Aid plus Peach Schnapps, Blue Curacao and Malibu.

  13. adena says:

    Vodka goes w/ Milk!!

(as long as you add kahlua….but, that’s a whole ‘nother story…)

  14. jube jubes says:

I honestly haven’t tasted kool-aid since that cult, Gateway to Heaven or whatever, got in the news about commiting suicide w/ it.
(for those of you that don’t keep up with your weird trivia, that was some time in the ’80s, i think)
Am i paranoid or what?? ;^)

  15. ChillyWilly says:

Ahh… a list of drink recipes. I never knew any alcohol would go good with root beer. I may have to try a Hard Root Beer and see how it goes down.

Long Islands… remember, just a splash of Coke.

Liquid Cocaine… I may have to try that, but not in multiples.

As for my staples, rum takes top of the list. Vodka, especially a good brand, is second. And whiskey has snuck it way onto the list. Beam, Crown Royal and Jack are the three I pour.

  16. sandra says:

Hmm. I’m kind of a mixed drinks pain in the ass (given that I’m not a soda fan and don’t like orange juice) so not a lot to add in the way of suggestions based on my own experience — but my flatmate swears by Makers & ginger ale.

Speaking of alcohol and Kool-Aid, though, there’s a bar near my house that makes a very Kool-Aid-ish martini…and that’s never a good thing. You think, “there’s practically no alcohol in this! It tastes so sweet and juicy!” Yet, not so true…

  17. Pauly D says:

I once invented a drink called The Red Skittle. You take vodka, some grenadine, and a teaspoon of milk and blend them together with a few ice cubes. What you get is frothy, tasty, and tastes just like a, yes you guessed it — RED SKITTLE!

  18. amanda says:

yuummmm…I *heart* Goldschlager…mixed or straight…I’ll have to try the Liquid Cocaine a try!

  19. Ben says:

I still think vodka smells, and to a certain extent tastes, like paint thinner. Tequilla, however, is much more fun. As is Midori and Pineapple juice. Baileys is nice as well. I don’t like beer however. I’d prefer wine, if given the choice. 🙂

    Also—

Homer: Lisa, would you like a donut?
Lisa: No thanks. Do you have any fruit?
Homer: This has purple in it. Purple is a fruit.

  20. Bre says:

I invented my own drink, one that the bartender at my local watering hole now offers as a “special”… I call it a “fire engine” – vodka, grenadine, and sprite…. but basically it’s a dirty shirley temple…

  21. Art says:

What about Vodka with your Coke with Lime? Oh that’s right, you can’t find any. Hmmm too bad, I bet that would be tasty.

Tequila shooters if I’m lookin to get tore up from the floor up. Henry’s or Coors if’n I’m just cruisin.

  22. Jessica says:

Oh, honey! Vodka is GREAT with apple juice! It’s called an Applejack and it instantaneously cures hangovers! Of course, you’ll then be drunk all day and are just postponing the hangover to the following day. But hey — putting off pain can be a good thing! Hell, just stay drunk!

  23. Bec says:

    Vodka…. mmmm…

Sorry, went into a vodka daze… Drink, yes, Comsopolitan (4 parts citron vodka, 2 parts cointreau, 2 parts cranberry and 1 part lime juice) – a couple of those and everything is schpeschal.

  24. Dave2 says:

Brent: Ah, but would you taste it ON Elizabeth Hurley’s lips?

Nicole: Coke with Lime mixed with Malibu?!? Sounds like my kind of drink! I love Coke with Lime.

Jon: Cinnamon & Whip Cream?!? Ah, so THAT’S what they mean by “dessert liquor!”

Cavan: 357 Magnum sounds tasty. Not sure about the Roadrunner Punch though… if I drink too many sweet liquors, I get sick.

Adena: Milk & Vodka? Scary. What would you call that drink? A Ghost Russian?!? I’m not too big of a Kahlua fan because I don’t like coffee… but I guess if you had a bunch of other alcohol in there to cover up the taste, then that might be okay.

ChillyWilly: Hard Rootbeer is yummy good. Too good. Long Islands are great because they’re mostly alcohol… nothing is worse than somebody who makes them with too much Coke. Liquid Cocaine can mess you up pretty bad if you’re not careful.

Sandra: Maker’s & Ginger Ale? Hmmm… that’s been added to my list. Kool-Aid Martini?!? I’d drink that!

Pauly: Red Skittle?!? That’s another added to my list. I don’t know why milk sounds so odd mixed with alcohol, but enough people are suggesting it that I’ll have to check it out.

Ben: Vodka tastes like paint thinner? To me, that would be gin. Wine is too nasty coming back up for me to drink very much of it.

Bre: Dirty Shirley Temple sounds so wrong… but I am dying to try it! 🙂

Art: Once before a trip to Hawaii, I drank so many tequila shots that I was drunk the next day on the plane. Ever since then, It’s been hard for me to drink tequila straight… it has to be mixed with other alcohols. Coke with Lime would be an awesome mixer for lots of different alcohols. Stupid Coke-heads should have never canceled it. 🙁

Jessica: Cure for hangovers? Now that’s too good to be true! Consider the Applejack added to my list!!

Bec: I’ve heard of a Cosmo, but never tried one. Sounds interesting, so I’ve added it to my list!

  25. jodi says:

oh the very first time i got drunk, it was on vodka and green kool-aid. so good!

vodka is my favorite, and i feel i am learning more today – reading over the suggestions in the comments, than i’ve learned, well all week, really.

  26. Ugly Toy says:

If your feeling adventurous and don’t mind acting incredibly weird for a few hours and not remembering it try a real Snakebite (about a half pint beer (Carling is recommended), a half pint cider (Strongbow works best) , a bit of blackcurrant (put this in first), and a double shot of Vodka. This is guaranteed to give you a VERY strange night. I’ve had it a few times, being thrown out of my Uni bar for getting on stage with the dancers, another time ‘waking up’ walking down a dual carriage way out of Brighton. I had to swear never to have them again.

Anything with absinthe is also fun, but lately I’ve been having Vodka and Dr. Pepper, or Orangina. Vodkas my favourite drink, I don’t really like beer.

  27. Neil T. says:

Over here a Snakebite is served in a pint glass, with around half a pint of lager, around half a pint of cider and then two shots of blackcurrent cordial.

I’m quite partial to a Cuba Libre – Cuban rum, cola and lime. Ideally it should be done with real Cuban rum but I think Cuban products are embargoed in the US so you’ll probably have to make do with evil Bacardi, or some other white rum.

There’s also Cheeky Vimto, which combines WKD blue (a sort-of bubblegum/raspberry flavoured vodka drink) and port. Quite popular with chavs, but I like it.

  28. theMike says:

Hell yeah, you can make me a Bad Monkey any day. Thanks for the Hard Rootbeer suggestion too, haven’t had that one yet, but will have to try.

  29. adena says:

Cosmopolitans are DRY DRY DRY. My mouth is puckering just thinking about them. Ugh. NOT a fan, sorry Bec.

A ghost russian…ha! Oh man, that would taste like poo. Nonono…I was saying you had to ADD THE KAHLUA for vodka to go w/ milk.

I hate coffee, too…but, for some reason I like Kahlua. I think it’s more of a mocha flavor than a coffee flavor…and I loves me some mocha! (Yes, they ARE different flavors!)

  30. Kevin says:

    “Liquid cocaine”?!?! Me want… NOW!

Will you be marketing Bad Monkey shotglasses now as well?

Katie discovered a drink that she loved called a Fuzzy Pirate. I’ll have to ask her what was in it.

  31. Bec says:

Adena, I usually (wow, that makes me sound bad, heh) have one after something sweet to balance things out. But, yeah, made right they are really tart. Made wrong (and a bar in my town really makes them wrong) they are just a mess…

Am going out to buy vodka now… and the already alcoholic tasting Diet Coke with cherry (that has just appeared on the shelves in my little city)… and some Kahlua… and ooo, some apple juice and… I’ll be clink clink clinking all the way home!

  32. nic says:

I thought I had tried everything! Vodka runs through my veins. I have to print this now and put it in my pocket for future reference. (the future beginning as soon as I get to the store) I think I’ll start with “The Bad Monkey”. It just sounds so good! The Captain and I get along very well.

    Thanks, everyone!

  33. karla says:

I loves me the vodka. I also loves me the cointreau. And the jameson’s.

Sorry, Dave, but the Bad Monkey sounds horrid to me. i HATE bananas and I think I have mentioned what Jaegermeister does to me? Oh and i once had a bad time with Cap’n Morgans, now that i think about it. I’m also afraid of monkeys, as well. Damn, throw some ground up clown in there and you have hell in a glass for Karla!

But vodka…ah, I can drink endless amounts of it and be coherent and funny almost all night. Until I fall asleep, that is.

  34. karla says:

OH and…the single most evil yummy sweet drink ever invented: The chocolate martini.

equal parts Godiva licquer, bailey’s, vodka (vanilla or regular) shaken over ice and strained into a martini glass which has been lovingly drizzled with hershey’s syrup. I had it at a lesbian bar a friend of mine owns in Houston and I swear I almost switched teams. Drunk dessert in a glass. imagine it on Elizabeth hurley…I almost was, that night.

I also make cosmos which my friends tell me are the best they’ve ever had.

    I get people drunk, it’s a gift.

  35. ms. sizzle says:

that bad monkey drink sounds really good actually. poor me one while you are it, please. 😉

ms. hurley’s tits look weird in that top. she is still hot but i am just saying. . .

vodka in kool aid is the only way i would drink it.

    🙂 sizzle

  36. Kimberly says:

Further east of the Cascades we call Jager Bombers “Bull Blasters” and they probably account for nearly half the drinks I make on weekends nights. (I’m a bartender by trade heh)
With St. Patty’s Day coming up you need to try an “Irish Trashcan”… all the kick of a Long Island PLUS Redbull and it’s green!

    ~Irish Trashcan~
Fill a pint glass w/ice and add your Tequila, Rum, Vodka and Gin. Near fill with 7-up then float with a splash of Blue Curacao. Now (and this is important) add a bit more ice so it’s level w/the top of the glass and pop open a can of Redbull. Quickly prop it into the glass (as if pouring it into) resting the open edge side of the can against the glass and the ice will hold it up. You serve it exactly that way, with the can propped. As you drink it changes from Curacao Blue color to anti-freeze green and it’s pure yummy goodness.

  37. Arwen says:

Do you do the sugar kool aid or the sugar free? I miss P-Rex too. I am a big fan of Campari, it is sort of an acquired taste but it is complex, it is fine with just soda water and lime or you can add a little cointreau to make it sweeter. It looks like Kool aid but tastes like bitters. good stuff.

  38. Patti says:

    mmmmmm Captain Morgan’s…..

  39. Naomi says:

Apple juice as a mixer, hu?

Try w/Cpt. Morgan. Sounds deelish, but I just can’t quit my Guinness…

  40. Vodka and any kind of smoothie is pretty disgusting…

  41. melina says:

that’s the most awful drink ever. barf.

i think the time we went to souplantation and mixed everyone’s leftovers in a 20 oz. glass and then topped it with coffee was better than that.

i think i just vomited a little in my mouth.

nothing beats a southern comfort hurricane…

  42. ichi says:

    I tried and disliked.
Although, one friend did like it and almost had it all gone. Poor thing.

Hey, Cricket, if you see this… Hey!
