Dave!And so the doctor says...

"Well, I have some good news and I have some bad news. The good news is that your stone is very close to being passed, and you should be clear sometime today. The bad news is that the CAT-scan reveals you have another stone lodged up in your kidney. It won't cause any pain until it comes loose and passes through... but that could be 10 minutes from now or 10 years from now. We really have no way of knowing."

And Dave says...

"Uhhh... thanks?"

Daves Kidney Stones

As fun as this was, I really have no desire to ever do it again, but there you have it. I'm holding on to my drugs, so at least I can medicate myself through this crap when it happens again.

Though I am having a hard time deciding whether the nausea and vomiting that the pain medication causes is worse than the actual pain.

In other news: Little Debbie Chocolate Cupcakes are just as delicious coming up as they are going down!

That really sucks. I hope you’re feeling better soon, Dave.

  2. robin says:

Does all pain medication cause you nausea? There are alternatives that might work better…I am sorry about your stone, or I should say, Your “baby,” as I understand that passing one rivals labor. 🙁 Drink lots of water! (bet you haven’t heard THAT in the past 24 hours!)

  3. Ben says:

Was Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy an option?

  4. adena says:

I HATE pain pills. Seriously, they make me so ill.

I’ll just take the pain, thanks.

(Well, I’ve never had the kidney stone pain, but I can state for a fact that torn rotator cuffs HURT!! And, I’d still rather just deal w/ the pain. I’d make a HORRIBLE junkie.)

Congratulations on the ticking time bomb. You must be so proud.

  5. Nez says:

Don’t thry pulverize those buggers with ultrasound these days so you just pass bits?

  6. Tracy says:

Bless your head…I hope you’re better soon!

  7. Mooselet says:

Drink lots and lots of water. It’ll make the passing easier.

Don’t know what kind of meds you have, but are you sure it’s the meds making you sick and not the stone? Pain’ll do that to you, too.

You poor bastard… I’m very sorry.

  8. Neil says:

It’s great that technology now allows medicine to be so exact in their findings — giving you a range of ten years for when this is going to happen again. Maybe if you write Elizabeth Hurley, she’ll take pity and come visit you.

  9. karla says:

I have absolutley no advice to give on kidney stones. I can only imagine and go “ouch” in wincing sympathy..

I can say that’s a damn shame that you react badly to the pain pills. Can they try a different kind?

  10. Belinda says:

Which is worse? That would definitely be the Pain. Get yourself some phenergan (promethazine) if you don’t already have some, so that at least you can hold down your pain meds, OK?

And as a veteran of pain and surgery (and painful surgery), the best advice (not that you asked for any) that I can offer is to take those meds on a schedule and do not vary from it. In other words, stay “ahead” of the pain. It’s ten times easier to do that than it is to “catch up,” say, if you sleep through a dose and find yourself in agony.

    Good luck, and much love.

  11. Anthony says:

Sorry to hear that man. 🙁

  12. Ouch.

    Hope you’re feeling better soon.

  13. Firda says:

Kidney stones suck! Get well soon!

  14. Naomi says:

    Mmmmmmm…

    Thanks for the imagery.

  15. Kevin says:

Is the first one gone yet? I hope so.

I’ll have to remember that Little Debbie trick the next time I get plastered.

  16. Jon says:

I had a kidney stone once before. A whole lot of no fun, even though I didn’t get the nausea or the vomiting. Get well soon.

  17. jube jubes says:

What are “little debbie chocolate cupcakes”??
when i’m in pain, i just take an advil. I’m not sure if it helps, but it makes me feel better. (i’m the kind of person who feels safest on medication) 😉

we should all pitch in and send you a monopoly game!! 🙂
    get well soon
