Rocky

Posted on Monday, October 10th, 2005

Dave! The reaction to my entry yesterday has been a little surprising. There's not a lot of comments, but I've received a number of emails... a large number of emails... from people who are concerned about me after having read it.

So, for anybody curious, I am not getting all sentimental about rocks because something terrible has happened in my life. I'm okay. My family is okay. My friends are okay. Everything is okay with me.

Except when I read the news out of Guatemala/Mexico and Pakistan/India.

Guatemala and Mexico have been hit hard by Hurricane Stan, with hundreds (perhaps thousands) dead. Pakistan & Northern India have been devastated by earthquake, with the death toll topping 30,000... and estimates saying the total could end up running much, much higher.

To calm my thoughts when I am upset, I often write stupid little stories for myself. They're just for me, and nobody but a select few ever see them because they often have meaning only to myself. If somebody were to read through my story journal, they'd probably think me insane because they couldn't possibly understand what was running through my head at the time I wrote in it.

But yesterday as the day was ending, I couldn't bring myself to write anything for Blogography with all the things going on in the world. I finally just decided to post the story of the little stone who fell, just to have something to say. I figured most people would ignore it or think I was medicated. But instead there was a bunch of email waiting for me when I woke up asking if I was okay.

So thanks for that.

What the story was trying to say was that sometimes we wish we were made of stone so that we could close ourselves to the horrors of the world around us. But if we were stone, we'd miss the good things in life as well, so we should be content with knowing that we're in the place we're meant to be. There are good things to be found if we open our senses to finding them.

At least that's what I keep telling myself.

But then I read the news that Aardman Studios (the people who created my beloved Wallace & Gromit) has burned to the ground, and find myself envying the life of rocks just a little bit once again.

That’s right the earthquake as devestating. It completely removed some cities out of their places. And the place where it hit is the Pakistan’s capital “Islamabad” also it ruined some parts of “Kashmir” ooo man:( the end of the world is near….

Belinda: You’re welcome! I’ll take thanks of any kind! 🙂

Jassim: Oh I hope that if you still have relatives and friends over in Pakistan that everything is okay for them. So very sad. It does seem as though our small blue planet is coming apart doesn’t it?

My friends began the celebration of Ramadan last week. I fast for health reasons, but find it an excellent way to gain mental and spiritual clarity myself…

That’s horrible news about the W&G studio. I only hope they can recover some how–not sure monetary, but emotionally.

The earthquake is also very sad, this loss of so much life reccently is something that can only be considered ‘bad’.

You write something thoughtful, touching, and kind. I write about penis shaped gourds. Wonder what that says about our respective characters!

  6. Dave2 says:

Yes, but I wrote an entry about penis salad, so I guess that makes me schizophrenic or something…

I have never taken the time to comment before, which is silly because I have been reading your blog almost every day since last June. I think the reason that people become addicted to your blog is because you are so truthful (and for me it is because you share a lot of the same values as me).

As sad as it is, I am a busy college student (degree in Architecture) who gets most of her news from you! Ha ha! Anyway, your compassion and thoughfulness are greatly appreciated in our … what shall we say… sometimes pathetic human existince.

You inspired me to begin my own blog. It is not as nice as your’s, but I always look to you for inspiration. So thanks!

Yessssss! Another minion for my evil horde! I am one step closer to global domination!!

Good luck with your blog. You can meet a lot of nice people with one of those blog things! 🙂

it’s nice to see the sensitive side of you too. thanx for sharing it.

it reminds us that we are all essentially humane living in an inhumane world.

on this same line of thought, when you know all the suffering that’s going on on our planet, i have these moments when i’m just doing something regular, like, “i’m just one wee human being walking across this parking lot and feeling really small but enjoying the air that i’m breathing and i’m going to walk through the grass even though it’s still wet because i can and just be happy that i’m here right now holding this cup of hot tea and not spilling it on myself”.

  11. James says:

It’s a beautiful little story. So nice, in fact, I felt the need to print it out and put it inside the cover on my binder (being a student, I have many such binders). I did give you credit along with your url, so that I might spread the word that is Dave.

  12. Troy says:

I was wondering if you were okay when I read the last post as well (just before reading this one since I’m many days behind in my Blogography reading). I know there were times in my past that I wanted to be a robot. Usually for emotional reasons 🙂

Good news on the W&G studios. The creater (Nick Parks I believe) had the original Wallace and Gromit characters with him when the studios burnt so at least there is a portion of the W&G collection still in existance.
