May

Posted on Monday, May 2nd, 2005

Dave!Somehow it became May and I didn't notice. Probably because I am too busy fighting with vending machines and watching television.

Of the two activities, watching television seems to be what I am more successful at. I say this because I am typing this entry one-handed after having damaged my other hand beating up a vending machine that stole my money. Fortunately, I did manage to shake two candy bars and a bag of chips out of the deal (even if none of them were what I was trying to purchase).

Tiger Heat. Ever since upgrading my PowerBook to MacOS X Tiger, it runs much hotter. I have no idea what is going on, but both fans are running constantly and my fingertips are burning up from typing on it. Perhaps it's the processor working harder or something? I've tried setting my "Processor Performance" to "reduced" but I'm not sure it's having any effect. This is a bit troubling, and I hope somebody at Apple is looking into it... assuming it's not just my imagination. I guess if she bursts into flames we'll know for sure.

JAG. One of my favorite TV shows, JAG ended its 10-year run last week. I just don't know what I am going to do with myself not being able to look at the sweet hotness of Catherine Bell each week. Oh well. At least they wrapped up the show nicely nicely. Here's hoping that some brilliant television exec finds her a new television show right away.

Catherine Bell

Mars DVD. According to the genius behind Veronica Mars, the first season is being rushed to DVD with a September street-date so that people who missed it can get caught up before the second season starts up again. The bad news is that there won't be time for any "extras" like commentaries and production featurettes to be included. As much as I would like to have these things, I'm just happy to be getting a release. The only thing that could possibly be better news would be if Rob Thomas's other excellent show (Jeremy Piven's Cupid, the best television series ever) was also being released.

Surgery TV. Is anybody watching Grey's Anatomy on Sunday nights? The show is excellent. The fact that Sandra Oh is in it is just icing on the cake.

Bandwidth Bust. My bandwidth usage continues to climb. I have no choice but to make a few alterations in how Blogography is arranged, or else I will top my new 80gig limit in 18 days (at the current rate). From now on only 7 days will be displayed on the front page (down from 10, which was my weekly average)... and all feeds will also display 7 days (down from 15). I apologize to those readers who only stop by once a week (since you'll end up having to go through the archives now), but there's just nothing I can do about it. This weekend I plan on chopping up the category pages into years so that the pages will serve up dozens of entries instead of hundreds. I'll also be killing trackback. Hopefully all these changes will keep me under the 80gig limit until next January when I can look for a web host with a bigger allowance (it's either that, or stop posting photos, like the one above, which I really don't want to do).

Movie Quotable of the Day: "You know what I've learned in my seven years here at Coolidge, Timmy? I've learned that you can't treat every situation as a life-and-death matter because you'll die a lot of times."
Yesterday's Answer: Feds (1988) with Rebecca De Mornay and Mary Gross.

The heat thing probably isn’t a good thing. As you say, it’s probably because the processor’s working harder, but it’ll be putting more strain on the cooling system which may ultimately lead to the system having a shorter lifespan. I pretty much killed my first laptop this way and my second is showing signs of going the same way, though it has at least taken longer to get there…

I’ll be missing JAG too, and especially Catherine Bell – I could really consider a carreer in the military if every officer looked like her.
I always liked the tension between Mac and Harm. The last season was a bit slow, though, so it was almost inevitable.
But losing both JAG and Third Watch has been tough on me – and the new Kojak sucked bigtime. Good that Dr Who is there together with CSI:NY and all the Law & Orders…

I love the movie from your quote today. No matter how many times I watch it, I still bust up laughing.

I have a seperate hosting account on Dreamhost that I use for hosting images only. I get 120GB of transfer and use about 10% of it. I am happy to set you up with an ftp account there if you need some extra juice. Of course it might be a pain in the ass to have to switch all the image links over in January (is there a product that can do batch processing for that?) but the offer still stands. Take care.

Is the bandwidth reduction the reason I get your pwned graphics when trying to view your feeds in a web based rss reader (feed on feeds)?

  5. Dave2 says:

If the heat is going to cause my laptop to fail, I hope it happens before December when my AppleCare runs out!

Kojak was a shock to me because I like Ving Rhames in the other things he’s been in. I haven’t seen Third Watch in a while, but was addicted to it the first season.

More than a few people have recommended DreamHost, so I will absolutely be looking into it come January. Hopefully the changes I’m making this weekend will solve the problem without causing difficulties… but if things continue to go wrong, I may end up having to borrow some image bandwidth, so thanks! 🙂

Sorry about that Andy… I have “HotLink Protection” enabled so people can’t link directly to my graphics and cause my bandwidth to climb even higher. In order to make sure “legitimate” requests are handled properly, I maintain a list of approved sites. Feed on Feeds is new to me, and I am a little confused as to how it works.

From the Feed on Feeds site, it looks as though the program resides on your personal server? If that’s the case, I should be able to solve the problem for Feed on Feed users by added their domain (or IP address) to my approved list. Just let me know, and I can try to fix that for you (and anybody else having problems).

Ever see the soft core adult movie Catherine was in? Hotline Volume 3 it was called. Yes, I was flipping through Skinamax one night (what’s a single girl to do, ya know??) and came across it. The entire time all I could think was “Is that the girl from JAG???” She doesn’t get real down and dirty or anything but if I remember correctly she does take off her top.

  7. mrjerz says:

Grey’s Anatomy is spectacular. Every character is believable, interesting, and even funny. And the fact that it trumped Boston Legal for the rest of the season must mean it’s getting watched, because Boston Legal was great and popular.

JAG was on 10 years? I remember when it came out — seems like yesterday — and thinking it wouldn’t last. Periodically, over the years, I’d flip past it and be surprised that it was still on.

None of my doubt about the quality of the show was based on anything, I’m guessing, other than a commercial or two I saw for it the first season. For whatever reason my intial impression was that it was a loser.

I’m seen maybe 1/2 an episode over the 10 years, and I thought it was fine, but I refused to get involved in the show as I knew it wasn’t going to be around much longer (this may have been 5 years ago — it seems like yesterday.)

I was obviously wrong about the ‘loserness’ of the show.

    10 seasons … that’s like 70 seasons of Lassie.

  9. Dave2 says:

I have not seen Catherine Bell’s porn flick, but run into still-frame captures from it every time I look for a photo to include here. She does not disappoint (unlike Tara Reid, who should have got a better plastic surgeon).

JAG had its ups-and-downs, but was consistently entertaining for all 10 years. It became consistently hot when Catherine Bell joined the cast. I mean, holy crap… that body in a Marine uniform?? Not only that, but she kicks ass as well.

Grey’s Anatomy took me completely by surprise. I tuned in because it had the cute girl from “Roswell” in it, and was expecting a cheap cross between Scrubs and ER. What I got was something altogether different… a painfully good show with first-class acting and amazing writing. I love it when that happens.

  10. JoeBruin88 says:

My new Apple PowerBook G4 is so quiet that I’m not sure that it even has a fan or fans. It does get hot though with Tiger. Are the fans supposed to make much noise because I hardly hear anything. Now I’m worried.

  11. Dave2 says:

Yes, but yours could just be more efficient at cooling the G4 chip than my 6-year-old Titanium PowerBook… this is probably just a problem for me because I refuse to part with my outdated hardware. 🙂
