Debatable

Posted on Friday, September 26th, 2008

Dave!I'm not one for discussing politics on my blog very often, because I just don't want the drama. Too many people are so hopelessly entrenched in their opinions that there is no room to attempt any understanding of people who have opinions different from theirs. It's sad, but that's the state of our polarizing politics today.

This is not to say that I don't have strong opinions of my own... of course I do. However, since I have no political party affiliation and will vote for both Democrats and Republicans depending on the candidate, I'm not quite so entrenched. I'll happily entertain opinions different than mine because that's the fun of it all. I love the diversity of the human condition, and welcome debate and discussion of ideas.

But there's a difference between "ideas" and "total bullshit."

And during tonight's debate, John McCain dropped such a huge load of bullshit that I am compelled to respond.

Now, I would never belittle John McCain's military service to this country. Nor would I diminish his surviving captivity and coming back home after five-and-a-half years as a Prisoner of War (though I don't believe being a POW immediately qualifies anybody for office of the President of The United States). I respect his service and sacrifice for the USA completely.

I also respect his service as a United States Senator and his being chosen by the Republicans as their candidate for President.

And I think it goes without saying that I respect those who are of the opinion that he's the best man for the job when it comes to running this country. I may not agree with them, but I do respect them.

There is not one piece of me that doesn't feel that John McCain believes everything he has done (and will continue to do) in public service is for the protection and betterment of The United States of America. Again, I may not agree with his actions, but I respect them because he believes them to be righteous and just.

Yet there is one area where I will not extend John McCain any quarter.

None.

And he brought it up as his final statement in the debate (underlined emphasis mine)...

Jim, when I came home from prison, I saw our veterans being very badly treated, and it made me sad. And I embarked on an effort to resolve the POW-MIA issue, which we did in a bipartisan fashion, and then I worked on normalization of relations between our two countries so that our veterans could come all the way home.

I guarantee you, as president of the United States, I know how to heal the wounds of war, I know how to deal with our adversaries, and I know how to deal with our friends.

So you resolved the POW-MIA issue?

I'm sure family and friends of our military persons still missing will be happy to hear that.

But it's complete and total bullshit, and McCain needs to be called on it.

Mostly because he is considered by veterans groups and family/friends of POW/MIAs to be the NUMBER ONE ROADBLOCK to discovering what happened to those still missing.

I could rant endlessly about what a hypocrite John McCain is and how much I have grown to loathe him over the years because of his complete and total disregard for POW/MIAs when he should be their greatest champion. But I just can't go down that road of hatred and anger again, as I've already traveled it so many times before.

Instead I refer to a blog entry over at Their Voice which details the whole ugly story about McCain and POW/MIA issues that are brushed aside and ignored by everybody. And I'm not talking just about the Republicans... I'm talking everybody. The so-called "liberal media"... NOTHING. Political advocates for our military men and women...NOTHING. Even the Democrats... NOTHING. Nobody gives a shit except those fighting to learn the truth, and there's far too few of us. I encourage you to read the entire article, but here is a summary I'm quoting of what makes McCain a total douchebag, and why I will never EVER vote for him to hold any office or position where he is representing the people of The United States of America:

Since his return from Hanoi, McCain has...

  • Ignored pleas of POW/MIA Family Members for his political influence in the overall POW/MIA Issue as well as with their individual cases.
  • Verbally abused POW/MIA Family Members in public and private.
  • Attempted to negatively influence those who testified before the 1992 Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs.
  • Diminished legislation that gave oversight and protection to the families.
  • Dismantled protection to any future servicemen that go missing.

For ten years I've been involved in working to find the truth about our missing heroes (which I've documented over at DaveWeb.org since 1998). I have written letters. I have bought POW/MIA flags for organizations. I have donated my time and money to helping groups promote the plight of our POW/MIAs. And I have adopted a MIA soldier who is remembered by me every single day for over a decade when I've put on his bracelet each morning. I can ignore most of the stupid shit I hear in politics, but POW/MIA issues are very personal to me, and I cannot ignore this.

John McCain can take his "guarantee" and shove it straight up his ass.

Because people like me WILL NEVER FORGET those still missing, no matter how often McCain tries to sweep them under the rug.

Because people like me care about those who risk their lives in service of this nation and, unlike McCain, believe that a war isn't over until all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country are FULLY ACCOUNTED FOR.

Because people like me can't fathom a "maverick" like McCain with his legendary bad temper and historic disregard for those in military service as our COMMANDER IN CHIEF.

Let the drama begin.

POW-MIA Logo

UPDATE: And so it has. For the learning impaired who have already started leaving hateful comments which have nothing to do with the issues I'm addressing (and are immediately deleted), this is not me "attacking a war hero." Read my fucking entry. I have nothing but respect for McCain's service in the military. It is John McCain who has no respect for our war heroes still missing! He got to come home from his captivity, but doesn't think other POW/MIAs deserve the same? Dead or alive, no soldier brave enough to put their life on the line for this country deserves to be forgotten.

And for those who just can't believe it, and find it impossible to believe that McCain could do such a thing, don't take my word for it. Here's a video excerpt of the award-winning documentary Missing Presumed Dead: The Search for America's POWs...

Nobody knows why McCain, a former POW himself, has consistently blocked all attempts by friends, families, and POW/MIA advocacy groups to learn what happened to those who are still missing. It is impossible to believe or understand, but there it is. And this is not a new issue. I'm not suddenly bringing this up just because McCain is running for president. I have been joining the fight for awareness of POW/MIA issues for over a decade, and McCain has always been a douchebag asshole working overtime against us. Is he hiding something? Covering something up? Who can say?

Why would anybody choose to serve in this country's military knowing that their Commander in Chief doesn't give a shit about them, and will forget about them like McCain has with our POW/MIAs? He is not a friend of our armed forces, he just exploits them in an effort to get elected. Brave men and women laying their lives on the line for their country are nothing more than a photo op to him. They deserve so much more. We all do.

But, again, don't take my word for it... research for yourself.

  1. Janet says:

I love that you brought up his temper. Throughout the entire debate I was just waiting him to explode… may happen yet.

But on the topic, I wish people wouldn’t just look at his time spent in a prison camp and assume that he must care for his peers. HE DOESN’T. He is the a selfish, hypocritical, divisive…his sick condescending tone (“What he doesn’t understand…”) is the paramount of bigoted bullshit. I hope that was obvious to everyone else. He’s the last thing I want America to present to the international community. How embarrassing.

The articles you linked to just gave me another reason to promote Obama relentlessly.

  2. Sue says:

OMG, thank you for this. I have been wondering if/what I could do for POW/MIA and their families. I work at an American Legion. We have in our post a table for them. Since I’m the cleaner I have to make sure it is presentable, but I damn near cry every so often seeing that table that they will never sit at. Unfortunately, nobody seems to know what I can do to help, but you, you’ve given me ideas. THANK YOU!

    Great post Dave!

  3. Mattie says:

I am not registered to vote.

I had not planned on voting.

I am going to register to vote tomorrow.

I decided this after watching the debate.

I was teetering on the fence after watching Senator Palin in action (if she says “good ol’ boys” one more time I’m going to barf).

After listening to McCain tonight, I decided I could not let this election go by and hope for the best.

Obama and McCain are pretty much in a dead heat.

If McCain wins, the fat lady will have sung and our country is going to hell in a handbasket.

And I’d have no right to bitch about it if I didn’t vote.

  4. Melanie says:

I just don’t even know what to say to that. I had no idea that this was going on. It was always my understanding that the search for POW/MIA was ongoing, and would be until each case was resolved. It’s sobering to see that this isn’t so.
As a person who is voting for Obama, I was, up until now, still able to say I felt respect for McCain as an individual… but I can’t really even say that anymore.
    Sad.
    Awful.
    SAD.

  5. Arwen says:

Eloquently written (even the part about shoving the guarantee straight up his ass). The debate got too painful for me to watch, I had to turn it off after awhile so I wouldn’t vomit because of the rhetoric he espoused.

  6. Avitable says:

That last statement by McCain last night was so over the top and superfluous, I almost gagged.

  7. Robin says:

People don’t want to hear the truth Dave….that’s what it is. It doesn’t matter what party you’re affiliated with. McCain reminds me of Rudy Giuliani running his entire political campaign on the backs of the nearly 3000 people who died on 9/11…people acted like he saved the city or some shit…it wasn’t him…it was the cops, the EMTs and the firefighters as well as the volunteers that brought NYC back from the brink of armageddon…not Giuliani and his racist ass. But then again, I lived in the area during 9/11…not most of the people who won’t agree with me…but whatever.

Rant done. Awesome entry as always.

And you know what? You SHOULD leave the comments left by people who are negative and dumb for nothing else to show how uninformed most people choose to be.

  8. Dave, thank you. THANK YOU for bringing something up that I was completely in the dark about. Something that affects me, as a military wife. Something that affects me as a family member of several war veterans. I had no idea. I’m flabbergasted.

I think I am one step closer to my decision on who I will vote for. a giant step

  9. Cris says:

Oh about those people posting hate responses to you for posting your thoughts on McCain…

Who are these people that are floating around the Internets waiting to defend the undefendable? Who are these people that instantly declare Sarah Palin the greatest asset to the RNC in spite of… well… Sarah Palin? Who are these people that should be able to look at the total chaos that the past 12 years of greed and deregulation have brought?

While all news networks are reporting the countdown to the end of the USA as a superpower…. and let’s face it, either way this economic bailout swings the dollar will be worth less than a Yemen pissing rock (rocks Yemen dudes pee on) so the end result is still going to be thousands of jobs lost, lives ruined as we head into the next Greater Depression. I’m telling you dude, if I didn’t live on the first floor with a thorny rosebush outside, I would jump out my freakin window.

You don’t suppose I’m reading too much into this catastrophic economic crisis, do you? Anyway… my point is… Who the hell are these people that keep defending THIS system?!!

  10. Dave2 says:

I have no idea who they are, but within 30 minutes of my entry being posted, the first hate-comment was written. Probably because McCain supporters monitor Technorati and immediately attack anybody who questions their candidate (much like those who registered on Twitter just so they could trash Obama during the debate).

Not surprisingly, none of the three hate-comments I’ve received so far have bothered to touch on the actual POW/MIA issues I’m bringing up. They just question my patriotism, call me stupid, and spew hate at Obama. Typical.

And don’t think for a second that I wouldn’t have written a similar entry for my blog if it were Democratic POW/MIA betrayer John Kerry who was the one running for president. This is NOT a partisan issue…

Democrats and Republicans alike are responsible for dishonoring our missing heroes and sweeping them under the rug. This is an issue that crosses party lines and leaves a trail of betrayal on BOTH sides.

  11. B.E. Earl says:

It’s amazing how something as blatant as this gets ignored in the press. Amazing.

Reason #3254 to vote for Obama.

  12. Sybil Law says:

I can’t believe I knew nothing about this! Thanks for the info. Now I’m going to go research some more…. It’s going to get me all pissed off and riled up. I’m definitely awake now!
    🙂

  13. CurvyG says:

Wow! Thank you thank you thank you!! What an eye opener!! I too was completely in the dark about this issue. Please continue to speak your mind. I will be sure to forward this info. to EVERYONE I know. Peace!!

  14. CurvyG says:

Wow! Thank you thank you thank you!! What an eye opener!! I too was completely in the dark about this issue. Please continue to speak your mind. I will be sure to forward this info. to EVERYONE I know. Peace!!

  15. A Lewis says:

Those types of “I took care of it” statements mean nothing to me. They are ambivolous, broad-based, and are purely political…designed to get the monkey off of the back. It’s quite obvious that nearly noone has actually solved any particular problem in and of themselves in its entirety. But you and I know that because we’re able to think things through and ask good questions. Unlike others.

  16. James Bow says:

Wow, Dave! I had no idea. Thank you for posting this.

  17. NYCWD says:

I honestly had no idea that McCain was such a traitor to his own.

    Thanks for making this known.

  18. IRV says:

THAN YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! If this asshole gets elected, we’re all in a shitload of trouble.

  19. kapgar says:

I hate having to admit to something like this but, just like Sybil, I was very uninformed on this. With all the propaganda floating around about McCain and his time spent as a POW/MIA, I guess I just assumed that he was a champion of their rights and finding those still missing and helping the families of the missing.

I feel sick having been so ignorant about this. I will have to look into it some more. Thank you for the resources and for opening my eyes a bit wider than they weren’t before.

  20. considering i really hate most political posts, i have to say that you did a great job with this, dave. thank you for the links. very appreciated.

  21. metalmom says:

Isn’t it funny that the first thing that came to my mind about McCain today was douche and you used it too.

    Hmmm….maybe we’re onto something…

  22. sizzle says:

Thank you for writing this Dave.

  23. annie says:

I did not know this, thank you for bringing this to attention.
Now, yet another reason I hate McCain. Besides his other bull-shit and his many attempts to claim credit for just about EVERYTHING.
Even if I did agree with him and thought he was competent, he should lose based on the fact that he chose that air-head Palin as his running mate.

On the other hand, I’m planning a laugh-fest party for the VP debates. Should be better than a night of Comedy Central.

  24. claire says:

Excellent post, Dave. I don’t think I have many readers not encompassed by yours, but this post is worth drawing extra attention to.

  25. I DVR’d the debate and watched it this morning. Wasn’t particularly blown away by either performance to be honest. At the very least though I thought Obama didn’t get crushed on Foreign Policy – supposedly McCain’s strong suit.

  26. Chris says:

Great post Dave, thanks for bringing this out for people to see. The PRB is now responsible for what the MSM is unable or unwilling to do. Great links and great information. I’ll be sharing this with people I know who are undecided…

  27. RW says:

I’m going to thank you for this info and then I’m going to stick my neck out.

I find it just a little disingenuous when I see people gettng excited about info like this so that it motivates them to get active. Not that I think active is bad – it’ commendable. But it seems a lot of this is preaching to the choir.

I’ve posted a list of lies and misrepresentations told by both candidates in the debate just now, and am sure I will hear a lot of crap from one side or the other about about how this or that was excusable or not as bad by degree.

The plain fact is that there were misrepresentations, mistakes, and some outright lies told in the first debate – to be sure. But they belonged to both candidates, when you lkook at them in depth.

I’m voting for Obama – I’ve said as much a few times already. But we as citizens of this country have got to get ourselves out from under the mantras our favorite parties hand over to us and SEE with our own eyes what is going on.

    Nobody comes up clean.

  28. Dave2 says:

As I said, I pretty much ignore most of the crap going on in politics and focus on the issues that are important to me… like POW/MIA.

Since this is personal, and McCain continues to play the POW card when he is one of the biggest betrayers in the POW/MIA community, I can’t stay silent. And if this gets somebody to question the other crap he’s been saying, then so be it. I am not campaigning for either candidate except to say that there is no fucking way I would ever vote for John McCain knowing what I know. He closed the debate with a massive lie, and people should be aware of that.

Everybody has to weigh the information they find and make the decision they think is best. In politics this is never easy because, as you say, nobody comes up clean. But McCain goes beyond dirty in the things I think are important, and POW/MIA issues are something that I think other people should feel are important too. I’m not going to regret getting people excited and active against McCain as a candidate, because I don’t want him for our President. If bringing things to light gets people to take a harder look at a candidate… EITHER candidate… that’s a good thing.

I’m a patriotic American that way.

  29. Mik says:

Great post Dave, learned a lot, I’m not a citizen so cannot vote, but If I could McCain wouldn’t be getting it.

I’m sure a lot of people appreciate your work on the POW/MIA issue.

  30. RW says:

I hear you loud and clear Dave and have no argument against you. I think my reaction is based on what I perceive to be an easy win in all this.

The people that signed on here and left comments about you personally and “how could you” and all that are one thing. Screw them. I actually think they’re lost souls. Too bad for them. Oh well. It might be more effective if you leave them up, unanswered, to show just how stupid they are. Who knows, it might have an even bigger impact.

But my thing is, as someone who has been voting since 1972, that we need to go into things with eyes wide open. Everybody has issues that are important to them – thank God. What’s important to me is that we don’t expect our chosen candidate to be the guy who will “fix” everything. I think we lead ourselves down blind alley when we expect that “we” won’t have to do anything about stuff. To me it feels that it’s important that folks see everything with eyes wide open.

There is an entire American paradigm that needs to be changed. Not just a mere President.

  31. Dave2 says:

Amen. I abhor politics and feel that the original intent of service to our country has been lost. It’s all about money and power now. Eyes wide open indeed.

  32. Mik says:

I’ve seen a couple of websites about those mia bracelets, is there an official site or something?

    I am interested.

  33. Dave2 says:

I put all the links for everything you need to know on my POW/MIA Links page at DaveWeb.org.

Operation Just Cause’s POW/MIA adoption form is here: Operation Just Cause Adoption Form.

  34. Jeff says:

I’m starting to see “McCain for Women” signs pop up in people’s yards now and I have no idea what that’s supposed to mean. If it means that he met Cindy while having an affair with her on his wife, then ya, he probably is for women. Especially younger women who haven’t been damaged by car accidents like his wife was.

Here’s what the Reader’s Digest wrote about them last month:

The McCains love telling the story of how they both fibbed about their ages that night; Cindy made herself four years older and John, four years younger. In a recent late-night TV appearance, Cindy told Jay Leno that “he kind of chased me around an hors d’oeuvres table” that evening. “I was trying to get something to eat and I thought, You know, this guy’s kind of weird.”

McCain was married at the time but has freely admitted that long before meeting Cindy, he’d “started carousing and running around with women,” as his friend and fellow Vietnam vet Robert Timberg wrote in John McCain: An American Odyssey. Carol McCain had been through a lot, waiting five and a half years for him to be released from captivity in Hanoi and barely surviving a car crash on the third Christmas Eve he was a prisoner. A former swimsuit model, she was much altered by the accident and has had trouble walking ever since. But she doesn’t speak harshly of her former husband and doesn’t seem to blame Cindy either. “I attribute it more to John turning 40 and wanting to be 25 again than I do to anything else,” she told Timberg in the only interview she has ever given on the subject.

Just over a month after the divorce was final (and after signing a prenup), John married Cindy, in May 1980, and went to work for her father, who helped him launch his political career.

    And this is ok?

So yeah, McCain for women. You go John.

  35. As a staunch McCain supporter, you have given me some serious food for thought. I don’t know if I’d be able to stomach voting for Obama because he is the anti-everything I believe in but reading this made me throw up in my mouth.

I have a lot of thinking to do over the next 39 days.

    Thanks.

  36. Watching the 2008 US Presidential race from the relatively safe distance of Australia increasingly feels like watching a train wreck about to happen. We’re totally impotent bystanders in the entire process which is somewhat frustrating given that the outcome of your elections have such monumental global ramifications. We can only hope there are many of your fellow countrymen as engaged and independently thinking as yourself.
    Robyn

  37. Miss Britt says:

I was completely unaware that there were still people unaccounted for.

How can that be? How can families be sitting there with that big question mark in their homes, and Americans – fairly INFORMED Americans – not know??

    Thank you, Dave.

  38. ChillyWilly says:

I’ve known for some time now your efforts you have undertaken for the POW/MIA and why out leaders and elected officials haven’t focused on this. And as you mentioned above, this isn’t a party issue, as John Kerry himself… someone who went to war, hasn’t put forth efforts towards getting any information on those still missing. Resolve is something that families of those that fought in war and never returned are looking for. Maybe some don’t feel the importance or have become disillusioned that winning in Iraq is more important. But the true irony in this is that there will be POW/MIA from the war in Iraq that will need the same attention and efforts that previous POW/MIA soldiers still need. It’s creating a true fucked up mess that will never see an end or a resolution… UNTIL people like yourself stand up and make more people aware of this.

Bravo 100 times over for not only this post, but for having a real issue and concern for not placing your vote for McCain. Giving McCain the top job will just brush this under the rug even longer.

  39. Kristin says:

    I’m with you Dave.

  40. Faiqa says:

I am so thankful to you for writing this. Really. I can’t believe I didn’t know this. I can’t believe there is actually opposition to what you are trying to do. So much in awe that I’m rendered speechless. Which is very unusual

  41. Peggy says:

Thanks for this. I really had no idea. This is just disgusting, it truly is.

My niece (17 years old) has a guest post up about the debate over at my place. Check it out if you can.

  42. Elisabeth says:

McCain is not only a traitor to the MIA/POW cause, but to military veterans in general. One of my students, who is an Iraq war veteran, has kept track of all pieces of legislation benefiting veterans against which John McCain has voted in the recent past. Believe me, it is astounding. For more on this, click here.

  43. Erin says:

Thanks for this information 🙂 I wish more people would look at his actual record instead of saying “he fought in a war! He must be a bigger patriot!”

  44. Coast Rat says:

    Dave:

This is an important story that needed to be told, and needs national exposure for others to read and think about, prior to voting. It is disgusting of him to make this fabricated statement to the American people, like he really cares…! Do you suppose that McCain has told this lie so many times now that he is actually believing it?

    Absolutely disgusting!

  45. Patty says:

That’s awful that he is standing in the way of getting more info about POW’s. Yeah, the big questions is why? Would be interesting to find out.

  46. Justin Scott says:

All I can really say to this is that I totally agree with you. I have become so disappointed with our government on both sides, but the way that the Republicans have been running things recently… I’m embarrassed. With the circumstances of our America right now, it is hard to have pride in my citizenship.

  47. Walter Lansberry says:

    Dave:

I’m glad you put this video up. When Bush put out the idea that Sen. McCain was a deserter in the last Presidential election and McCain sat silent, I lost a faith in the Senator. Not only did he allow Bush a thief, draft dodging liar, and drunk insult his character he allowed him to do it to every POW. To sit back and take those “lipstick” like comments showed McCain for the “yes” man he is. He like the rest of Congress that are waiting to bail out the financial market after the election could care less about anyone but themselves. This entire war debate comes down to the basics are you for sending men and women to be killed or are you not. For me, there hasn’t been a war off shore worth sending my neighbors to die. We’ve lost freedom already. Our propaganda just tells us otherwise.

    Walt

  48. jane says:

I abhor McCain. Every single thing that comes out of his mouth is a lie. I finally realized he speaks so robotically because he doesn’t believe a word he says; there’s no passion whatsoever.
But on to what you wrote about ~ I remember the Vietnam War, although I was only 9 or so, a family friend was drafted, he survived, but he was never the same. The change I witnessed in him & 1 particular incident changed my life forever; it’s probably the most significant incident in my life.

I remember the POW/MIA bracelets in Jr. high, but for some reason I thought they had all be found or accounted for. Thank you for writing this & for providing the websites.

Along the lines of what RW wrote, these last 8 years have been terrifying & I’m amazed our country has survived as well as it has ~ all things considered. But I believe this is a wake-up call to every single one of us to become involved in the political process & let our voices be heard. And if they’re ignored, we need to say it again and louder.

This post of yours defines the benefit of blogging. Thanks Dave.

  49. whall says:

People who think it’s unpatriotic to be able to have criticism for a veteran or a former POW are just as bad who think it’s racist to have criticism for a black Presidential candidate.

All men have faults. What a voter has to decide is – where do the faults line up with my personal values? Also of great importance is whether a fault is a one-time thing or an ongoing worldview.

Myself? I can forgive McCain for a one-time mistake. I don’t know one iota of details of his capture, what he was forced to do, or what happened over there that would make this coverup and/or blockage important enough to occur. The mind boggles at the possible reasons: 1) maybe McCain did something so horrific that if America found out about it, he’d be ousted and be out of a career, so he wants it covered up. 2) maybe one (or more) of his fellow soldiers did something so horrific, he’d be ousted and remembered wrongly. 3) maybe the government messed up so bad over there that it’s better that it stay hidden. 4) maybe there’s intel surrounding the situation that, if let out, would cause irreparable harm to the relationship with other countries and cause more turmoil than we can take at this time.

The point is – we don’t know. Given McCain’s record on everything else, I’m still wont to believe that he did the right thing, as bad as it might look. In fact, the more I see his reactions, the more I believe that point of view – that he’s personally taking the incredible amount of flak and being the sacrificial lamb (or scape goat) in this situation because he knows it’s right for the country.

So, I’m able to forgive a one-time mistake. What concerns me MORE in this election are the ongoing mistakes and the extreme differences in policy that Obama has from my personal values. I have to ask myself – what would a candidate do in a particular situation? I side with McCain on so many more of those hypothetical situations.

  50. jane says:

I’ve never heard of something not being divulged regarding his POW experience. Would you please elaborate?
