Internet

Posted on Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

Dave! The scream (which sounded something like "WAAAAAAAAGGH!") was yelled at nobody in particular and did nothing to alleviate the burning pain. Then, once I realized I was scrubbing Apricot Facial Cleanser into the open wounds on my face, it sounded something like "OH SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!" Then I have the task of trying to flush out the tiny particles of walnut shell, which usually do such a great job of scraping off dead skin cells, but are now causing me to cry "LIFE IS SO UNFAIR!!" as I splash water on my face at a frantic pace.

It would seem this is not going to be such a good day to be Dave.

This was later confirmed when I found out that my internet router is dead.

I can't stand how much my life revolves around having internet access, and how huge a problem it is when I am disconnected from it. It's like I NEED internet to survive or something. Overcoming drug addiction must be a walk in the park by comparison.

Which is why I am checking email and writing in my blog over a dial-up connection tonight.

It's far, far slower than I ever remember it being...

PLEASE tell me its at 14.4 kbps. Please!!!
You should sue your dermatologist for not explicitly telling you not to use apricot scrub on your face after treatment. Wouldn’t that be fun?

  2. adena says:

Um….if you KNEW you had open wounds on your face…what on earth possessed you to use APRICOT SCRUB??

I can only deduce it was the lack of internet connection frying your brain.

    Your poor face.

In October, I had the thrill of using my mother’s dial-up AND going through AOL.

I forgot what it was like as well. It was exasperatingly slow. I could connect and make toast with jam for two while I waited to hear that nightmarish squelch. Ouch!

I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have connectivity 24/7. With the exception of food grocery shopping (and only because no one delivers in Podunk, PA), I do everything online.

It’s my lifeline to paying bills, buying gifts, checking lab results from the doc’s office, buying staples / sundries for the house, genealogy research … just everything.

When the kids were in high school, I could even check to see what their homework assignments were and how their progress was.

If I lost my connection for more than a couple of hours, I’d start twitching uncontrollably!

You know it’s going to be a bad day when… You have to dial it back to 1999!

  5. Now you know why I continue to post from a Sidekick rather than using my computer and investing in a landline. Tiny keyboard, but so much faster.

I am actually ready to move from this apartment to another where they can get a HS cable connection to work. I need my internet!

  6. RW says:

It’s not an addiction. You just do it for fun. You can handle it. You can stop any time you want to. It doesn’t have the same effect on you as it does on others. It isn’t like you have to have it. You do it because you want to. It’s just something you do once in a while. You only……

  7. Göran says:

You are not alone with the internet addiction. Today there´s an article about stress related syndromes due to slow loading webpages.

I´m trying to come up with something witty about the facial wounds and apricot scrub but I´m suffering from internet withdrawal syndrome right now

    *shakes* *shivers*

  8. Avitable says:

I actually pay for two broadband modems from different ISPs just so I can plug into my backup if the other one dies.

  9. ms. sizzle says:

apricot scrub is awesome (just not on open wounds).

i worry how impatient the internet has made me. getting information and connection in seconds has spoiled me. when my system is slow i get antsy and want to go do other things while i “wait.” when in actuality it’s probably like 30 seconds longer than i am used to.

  10. Rick says:

I’d be way more worried about the Apricot Facial Cleanser than the Internet addiction. You’re not taking the Internet internally are you?

  11. jodi says:

i know what you mean. i love the internet, but i am a bit frightened by my dependency upon it. but, we are dependent upon lots of modern conveneinces anyway. purified water sources. central heating. am/pm’s.

  12. Wayne Hall says:

I’m reminded by my blackberry to tell you that I am not addicted to technology.

  13. delmer says:

I’m always amazed at how much I’ve come to rely on broadband. Especially since it wasn’t that long ago that we didn’t have it.

Six years ago the place I work didn’t have broadband or company-wide e-mail. Now, if the web is unavailable or mail is down I get a call from half the building (if only the phones would go down at the same time.)

  14. Wait…what is dialup? I don’t understand. Is that like a record? or cassette tape?

  15. Kevin says:

    Dial up??? My heartfelt sympathy.
