Day Five: Barcelona, Spain

Posted on Thursday, February 3rd, 2005

Dave!I took a quick two-hour flight on the ever-excellent GermanWings airline out of Cologne, and ended up in Barcelona. Since I had never been here before, it was going to be a new adventure for me. After taking the train into the city, I checked in to my hotel, grabbed my camera, and then headed out.

My first stop was The Cathedral, a compact yet no-less impressive church at the heart of Barcelona. Unfortunately, as with most places I've been visiting lately, the structure is completely covered in scaffolding and undergoing repairs. I was a little disappointed, but that vanished just moments after entering the grounds. It's hard to be upset when you are greeted by geese...

Leaving my new friends behind, I enter the building...

...and proceed to lose my mind. The architecture is just amazing here. Eventually I manage to tear myself away so I can go eat lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe...

Don't let the plain exterior fool you. Inside, it's all Hard Rock and very well done...

It's still fairly early, I think I'll go wander through Old Town and see what I can find.

That inquisitive goose picture? With the tilted head? Adorable.

Man, I have to find someone to lead me around Europe so I can walk around looking at all the ceilings w/o killing myself.

That goose was something special alight… he had been eating when I cam along and started taking photos, but stopped and looked at me strangely when he noticed. He’s a bit of a sloppy eater, as you can still see greens on the side of his face.

Ceilings of grand old structures are some of my favorite parts. You can avoid unnecessary death while viewing them if you stop to look instead of keep walking. This does not prevent people from running into you, however.

I am off to Barca at the end of Feb. I can’t wait I have never heard a bad word against the city.

My trip is going to include 2 visits to the Camp Nou (FC Barcelona home ground). Once with 98k fans inside and then the next day with no-one so I can go on the tour.

Did you go up the cable cars near the harbour?

  5. Dave2 says:

It’s hard to fault a beautiful city like Barcelona, though I did run into more than a few pickpockets working the streets. That’s always sad, but part of any big city, I suppose. Besides, if you are careful and don’t flash money around, you shouldn’t have any problems.
